Two options:

  1. Hiking in the area of Österåsens health home (1-6+ km)
  2. Nipleden from Sollefteå Camping-Forsmo-Österåsens Health Home-Sollefteå Camping (27 km)

1.Hiking in the area of Österåsens health home (1-6+ km)

Directions to trailhead:

From Resele, drive south on 90 approximately 16km. Turn right onto the Turistveg, which loops back towards Ed. Turn left at the sign to Forsmo and drive over the Forsmo bridge. Turn left (south) onto Södra Forsmovagen. Proceed 6km and turn right towards Långsele. Drive 1.5km and take your second right, which will be a sharp uphill turn and proceed to Österåsens Hälsohem. Follow the signs for the parking area, which features some maps and ends at Spårcentral. To begin on the Nipleden, proceed through the property to the far eastern side, looking for small blue and white signs for the Nipleden.

Note: Google maps will suggest that you take the first right off the road to Långsele towards the North Inn B&B. This road does not go all the way through to Österåsens Hälsohem. However, it ends at a trailhead for the Nipleden, so this stretch of trail can be added on to the trip, as it is a short uphill hike of less than 1km to Österåsens Hälsohem, from where the Nipleden continues north towards Västenberget.

Trail description and historical background:

Österåsens Hälsohem is a wellness center, the history of which dates back to the turn of the 20th century. It offers various treatment programs for physical health, stress-management, and well-being, whether for day guests or for an extended stay. Thus, although the Nipleden passes through Österåsens Hälsohem property, one should maintain a respectful, quiet atmosphere while in the vicinity so as not to disturb others who are in residence for the purpose of self-improvement.

The main trails of Österåsens Hälsohem are a color-coded system of gravel trails of various lengths. They start from Spårcentral. From Spårcentral, trail to the left marked by red and yellow diamonds will quickly take you across the property (less than 1km) to continue on the trail system that leads towards Högtrykberget and Majberget. As you leave Österåsens Hälsohem’s trail system at an intersection near the power lines, continue straight along the wide path. In a few hundred meters, the red diamond trail branches off to the left, which is a narrow trail that follows the northern slope of Högtrykberget and passes by a small myre. The yellow diamond trail continues straight towards Majberget. Both trails connect to an extensive network of other trails in the area.

The other attractive hike from Österåsens Hälsohem is the section of the Nipleden that passes through the property. It is well marked and easy to follow from the lower parking area near the North Inn B&B (see directions). It can also be located by proceeding to the east side of the property if you parked in the main lot of Österåsens Hälsohem. Follow the blue and white Nipleden signs. The first section of the Nipleden is gravel paved like the other Österåsens Hälsohem trails. There are three excellent vista points of the Ångermanälven, the first two looking downstream towards Sollefteå, and the third looking upstream towards Forsmo. Each vista has a picnic table for resting. At the third vista, you will also see a shelter. Here, the Nipleden continues behind the shelter, becoming a foot path. The gravel path that curves to the left and downhill is part of the Österåsens Hälsohem trail system. If you follow the Nipleden further, it will pass through a pine forest before descending steeply towards Västenberget under the power lines. Right before reaching the road to Västenberget, the Nipleden intersects another unnamed trail that can be used to head southwest, ascending to the intersection described above where the Österåsens Hälsohem red and yellow diamond trail leaves their property and becomes unpaved. Note that this trail up the mountain is not well maintained, and the tall grass and wildflowers can make finding your footing difficult in areas. It is a plausible alternative to reaching the other trail network. It is approximately 3km to hike from the Nipleden at Österåsens Hälsohem to the intersection where the red and yellow diamond trails leave Österåsens Hälsohem. To continue on the red and yellow trail network, turn right at the intersection, going opposite to the paved gravel trail. To return to Österåsens Hälsohem, turn left onto the gravel trail.

2. Nipleden from Sollefteå Camping-Forsmo-Österåsens Hälsohem-Sollefteå Camping (27 km)

Directions to trailhead:

You start at: Sollefteå Camping, Risövägen 4, 881 30 Sollefteå.

Trail description and historical background:

The impressive sandy hills, nipor, give this trail its name. Ice from the Ice Age began to melt 20,000 years ago and `only` 10,000 years ago this area became ice-free.

Section Sollefteå camping-Forsmo:
Start at the campsite in Sollefteå, then the trail goes in the direction of the hydropower plant where you follow a dirt road upstream the river. After about 1km the gravel road becomes a hiking trail straight up the hill (nipan) – you are now at the Nip-trail. Some hills, nipor, you pass can be steep. The Nip-trail ends up in Forsmo via a bridge.

Section Forsmo-Österåsens hälsohem.
After the bridge in Forsmo, you follow the trail “Trolldalen”. After that there will be about 2.5 km of gravel road, then follow the power line at the Nasafjället, there will be a decent climb uphill. Follow the path until you reach Österåsens hälsohem.

Section Österåsens Hälsohem-Sollefteå camping:
From Österåsens hälsohem, the trail crosses a small bridge at Granvåg. Then the trail continues along the Ångermanälven river. After a while you arrive at the Rödskäggsnipan towards the end of the road in Skärvsta. You continue along the road (gravel, asphalt) towards the power station bridge where you pass the river to return to the campsite. Here you can take a turn up at Pettersborg, where you have beautiful views of central Sollefteå.
